Signs of a failing System:
Some Systems have alarms, flashing beacons or control panels with error codes to signal that something is wrong. If yours does not, here are some common signs that your system is failing or not running at optimal efficiency:
- A foul, offensive odour. A healthy system should give an earthy smell
- Your tank, plant or pump fills up faster than usual
- Unusual ‘clunky’ noises can be heard from your system when you lift the lid
- There might be new damp, soggy patches in your garden
Whether you’ve recently bought a property with an existing system or had a new one installed recently, it’s crucial to consider what comes next. Ensuring long, reliable, and efficient service is not only practical but, in the case of sewage treatment, is also a legal requirement. You must maintain the system’s effectiveness to avoid polluting the environment.
Sewage treatment is no exception to the rule “You get out what you put in”. To safeguard your system’s efficiency, avoid putting non-biodegradable substances down your drains; opt for materials that biodegrade in days, not years. By being mindful of what you dispose of, you ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your investment.
Typically, a single-house plant or equipment in a household setting only needs maintenance once a year. However, in larger domestic and commercial settings where the flows and loads are higher, the strain on the plant or pump station is greater. This can lead to significant consequences for businesses, particularly if there is a failure. The recommended frequency of maintenance visits will depend on the mechanical and electrical upkeep requirements, as well as the environmental and financial implications of a potential failure, especially from a public relations standpoint.
Unlike other maintenance providers, we keep things simple and transparent. There’s no need for you to assess the potential risk and cost of breakdowns or weigh the value of all-inclusive plans. With us, you get a straightforward visit price along with the cost of the parts used. During our visit, we proactively replace necessary consumables, such as low-cost air filters and air pump diaphragms, to ensure continued satisfactory treatment performance and operational efficiency until the next service. Furthermore, our extensive maintenance portfolio allows us to negotiate competitive prices from suppliers, and we pass these savings on to you.
We are delighted to have earned and maintained several service agreements for clients’ assets across the country. By providing responsible, well-planned, and preventive maintenance, we ensure better ongoing value and security. We highly recommend this approach to everyone.
Our team of Service Engineers are experts in providing exceptional maintenance services at reasonable rates. They are accredited by British Water and possess the necessary skills to carry out all maintenance work to a high standard. Additionally, our team holds several health and safety accreditations to ensure that all on-site work is conducted safely and responsibly.
In the office, our full-time Service Manager is supported by an administrative team and a Senior Engineer. This ensures that there is always someone available to address your inquiries, whether it’s a simple question or the need for a coordinated response during breakdowns. For those customers with business-critical sewage treatment installations, and pumping systems in particular (think hotels as wedding venues and caravan sites in the summer holidays), we also offer out-of-office-hours breakdown response and incident management.
We are proud of the administrative procedures that differentiate us from others. We work closely with our commercial clients to ease their paperwork burden by maintaining asset registers, asset condition reports for capex planning and maintenance budgeting and service schedules for site access. Additionally, our internal notes contain information about the temperaments and quirks of specific plants, which is especially useful during site ownership changes.
We understand that living or running a business off-mains can mean being in remote locations. That’s why our vans are fully equipped with all the required tools and spare parts to perform routine maintenance and repairs, including those that are not so common, during the first visit.
If we haven’t worked with you before and you’re experiencing issues with your drainage field, pump station, or treatment plant, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We have extensive experience in successfully resolving various problems and would be happy to assist you.

The Environment Agency and SEPA recommend regular maintenance visits to ensure the system is working efficiently and is not polluting the environment.
As part of our maintenance visit, we will thoroughly examine your system to ensure that its tank, pump, or plant is functioning properly. Additionally, we will inspect your drainage field and conduct tests on the treated wastewater to ensure that it meets the necessary standards.
The introduction of the 2020 General Binding Rules puts a stronger emphasis on the responsibilities of the owner of a wastewater treatment system. The Environmental Agency (EA) is now actively enforcing compliance with these rules through random discharge testing. If they suspect your system is polluting the environment, one of the first things they will ask for is your records of service and maintenance visits. This applies to both businesses and homeowners.
We offer comprehensive reports that detail the tests, preventative maintenance, and repairs we have carried out on your tank, pump, or plant. Our engineers also provide notes on your tank’s particular temperatures and idiosyncrasies. We suggest that you keep these records for future reference, such as when selling the property.
Investing in off-mains sewage systems can be costly for both homeowners and businesses. To maintain the efficiency of your system, reduce the risk of malfunctions, and comply with regulations, we suggest scheduling regular maintenance.
How often does my system need maintenance?
There is no one-size-fits-all recommendation for system maintenance as it depends on the system’s flows and loads. According to UK Government regulations, a single-house plant requires servicing at least once every 12 months. However, for larger commercial properties such as hotels or caravan parks, which put more strain on the system, more frequent visits are necessary. The manufacturer’s instructions offer guidance on the recommended maintenance frequency specific to your system. Our engineers are also available to suggest the optimal maintenance frequency for your system.
During our visit, we replace any consumables that we believe are necessary to maintain the satisfactory performance and operational efficiency of the plant before the next service. If additional maintenance is required, such as a repair, we will provide a report explaining the reason and a quote for the work.
Our service engineers are highly skilled and dedicated to delivering maintenance services with a high level of professionalism, courtesy, and effectiveness while minimizing any disruptions.
Our team of engineers is well-qualified with British Water Accreditation and supervised by a senior Service Engineer to ensure top-notch competence and quality in their work. Our Service Engineers specialize in repairing and maintaining sewage treatment plants, septic tanks, and pump stations. We also have a dedicated team of Installation Engineers who focus solely on installing sewage systems, so you can be confident that the most capable person will handle your requirements.
Our engineers have fully-equipped vans that carry all the necessary tools and most common parts required to perform routine preventative maintenance during the first visit.
